A unique story and collection
Sherry and Joel Foutz purchased a small screen printing and embroidery business in 1987. “But six months later we had a fire and lost everything,” said Sherry. Now in their fifth and final location, Advertising Ideas has expanded into the family business it is today, employing 24 people (their children and one cat are also welcome). “Jonell started coming to work with me when she was six weeks old,” said Sherry. Now VP, Jonell Lucero recalls jumping in to help at an early age along with her siblings. “Now we’re a one-stop shop,” she said, including promotional products, engraving services, tactical uniforms, and rush orders. “Popular items come full circle,” said Jonell. “Like neon, trucker hats, and button-up coach jackets that were popular in the 80s.” Joel is involved with other family business and farming ventures in Kirtland. “He is supportive, but gives me wings to fly,” said Sherry.
Advertising Ideas provides the Connie Mack World Series souvenirs, and has for 30 years. “We work 15-hour days during Connie Mack,” said Sherry. She is a certified tribal affiliate (as a member of the Pottawatomi Tribe); as such, Advertising Ideas is a preferred vendor for the Navajo Tribe. She also takes advantage of federal loan programs for woman-owned small business (WOSB).
A common thread
Sherry believes that supporting local business has a trickle-down affect. “We try to accommodate that because it supports us too, which is why we choose to bank locally,” she said. “I support people who support us, and the bank buys from us too.” Sherry was referred to FCCB Commercial Lender, Clete Berens. “He is everything that we were looking for and understands our market,” said Sherry. “We went with a local bank because they know our community and economy,” said Jonell. “Other banks don’t take that into consideration.”
Sherry has since moved all her personal and business accounts to FCCB. “FCCB offers a wide spectrum of services. I use everything from online banking to lines of credit and commercial real estate loans,” she said. Jonell believes the relationship they have with a local bank is very beneficial. “And everyone at the bank is so friendly,” she said. Sherry says her son, Jesse, feels like he is treated like a king when he walks in. “Everyone jumps up to shake his hand. Banking locally makes a huge difference.”

Relax and escape
JoVella Blinzler has been cutting hair since high school. She credits her mom for sparking her interest as a little girl. With JoVella’s car packed and headed to scout schools in Texas and California, her mom ran out of the house stating Mr. John’s Academy had just called and awarded her a cosmetology scholarship! “I wouldn’t have had the life I have if I’d left,” she said, recalling how close she was to pulling out of the driveway that day.
JoVella received her license in 1981 and opened JoVella for Hair. She and her longtime former salon partner, Randy Rogers (of Randy Rogers Hair Design), saw Nearly Famous on a bumper sticker and were inspired to rename the shop when they joined forces in the late 80s. “We want people to relax and escape when they come in,” said JoVella, regarding the salon’s atmosphere. She gives her regular clients a personalized calendar to note their routine appointments. JoVella believes Nearly Famous is different because she works late, uses high-end products, has several long-term employees, and promotes the latest salon education.
Creative financing
The full-service salon has relocated a few times over the last 40 years, but is now in a new building, built by her husband, Ed. It wasn’t an easy project; multiple land and property complications delayed its opening. JoVella called FCCB President and CEO, Sheila Mathews about refinancing. “It was such a relief to have everything consolidated after all the trouble we had. She is my hero,” said JoVella. “It’s nice to have a local bank that is pro-business and wants to see people succeed.”
JoVella credits FCCB for creative financing and friendly service. She has also adopted FCCB’s account services, online banking, credit cards, and payroll for greater ease of business. “They changed my life. I am so grateful to Four Corners Community Bank.”
JoVella expresses gratitude to the following staff
Hair stylists: Lori Estrada, Joan Greenfield, Tammy Williams, Lindsey Garcia-Stinson, Jessen Chynoweth, Cadie Hargrove, Carolyn McAdams. Massage and spa: Sara Maxwell, Elizabeth Fernandez, Gina Keenan. Nails and pedi: Felencia Belin. Salon and desk coordinators: Lisa Johnson, Averee Adams Chacon, Lori Dollar. Office and inventory manager: Bobbi Nelson
The local difference
Durango/Aztec Urgent Care prides itself on offering more than typical urgent care services. “Compared to other clinics, we offer an advanced level of care in terms of staff experience and qualifications,” said CEO, Bryan Vincent. “We fill the gap between primary care and the ER,” added Owner Operator, Holly Andersen. “Plus, ER costs about five to six times more than going to urgent care, and the wait time is much higher.” Holly credits their commitment to providing a desirable workplace as a means of providing great service. “If staff are happy and enjoy coming to work, it shows in their care.” The clinics also offer job-related, pre-employment occupational services, and are open seven days a week. Owner/Operator, Mike Andersen says they are unique as the only locally owned and operated urgent care in Durango and Aztec. “We’re proud of that.”
Giving back to the community is also part of the local team’s business model. “Finding a need such as helping kids experience things they wouldn’t otherwise be able to is meaningful to us,” said Holly. For example, Durango/Aztec Urgent Care hosts Alien Mountain Bike Race along with FCCB and other Aztec businesses each year in May.
Where character matters
Mike feels FCCB’s philosophy and emphasis on knowing and trusting its borrowers is unique. “They had faith in us as people, our character mattered,” he said. He also appreciates the ease of doing business with FCCB. “Our loan process was simple and streamlined, and the board made quick decisions,” said Bryan. “We never felt like we were at the mercy of a corporate bank. We were told it would be easy, and they delivered.” He also appreciates not having any transaction errors since moving their accounts to FCCB, as well as having branches in the same cities they operate. “I can walk over to make deposits and talk face-to-face any time,” said Bryan. “I’ve never had anything other than positive experiences.” FCCB’s cash management services also help streamline their business operations and save them time. “And they know our names!” said Holly.
“As a small business, it’s nice to feel wanted versus feeling like a burden,” said Bryan. “FCCB is different in that they’re connected from the top, down. The communication is apparent.” The Andersen’s were also pleased with the same-day attention FCCB’s mortgage department provided. “Within 24 hours, we were pre-approved so we could move forward. That’s the difference: the responsiveness, how quickly we see results, and the follow through,” said Holly.
